Manchester United are said to be interested in Roma attacker Erik Lamela.

All the talk about Manchester United and potential summer transfer targets right now is focusing largely on one man; Cristiano Ronaldo.

And why not, the Portuguese phenomenon has scored 39 goals for his club this season and any chance United have of bringing him back they have to seize.

But a report in Italy has claimed United are still considering their options and looking elsewhere - namely Roma.

Corriere dello Sport report today that the Red Devils are still pursuing Erik Lamela, the Argentine winger who has been tearing up Serie A this season.

The newspaper describe Lamela as an 'object of desire' for Sir Alex Ferguson, adding the Scotsman is like 'a dog with a bone' when it comes to a transfer target, with 35 million Euros set aside to bid for him.

They are clear no bid has been made, but nevertheless maintain United are willing to pay that amount.

However Roma have no intention to sell their star attacker, although receiving such a firm cash offer could cause them to reconsider.

Ferguson was interested in Lamela before he headed to Italy and is said to have been tracking his progress

Lamela cost Roma £14 million from River Plate in 2011, and at only 20-years-old he has been one of the club's top stars this season.

He has scored 11 goals in 21 Serie A games this season and provided two assists, with highlights including a brace against AC Milan, a rapid improvement from the four goals he netted in his debut campaign in Italy.

Reading between the lines the right-winger is a potential replacement if Nani does not sign a new contract and Ronaldo is unattainable, with James Rodriguez or Porto another alternative.

If Lamela is the man they go for, we have a feeling United fans will not be disappointed.

Check him out in action...

Would you be happy if United signed Lamela?
