Rafa Benitez will not have won many friends at Chelsea with his press-conference outburst after the FA Cup win at Middlesbrough, but if reports were to be believed, he didn't really have any at the club anyway.
The Spaniard accused Chelsea fans of having an agenda against him, while stating the club's board were wrong to include the tag 'interim' on his job title, even going as far to suggest it was because he was a former Liverpool manager.
The 2005 Champions League winning coach pointed to his own trophy haul, urging Chelsea fans to get behind the team between now and the end of the season, or face life in the Europa League beyond the remainder of this season.
So while friends at Stamford Bridge are in short supply, a former Liverpool player has defended him.
Well done Rafa. Can't help think the job was always cursed. players with to much power an a minority of fans who think they know best. Mmmm— Jason MCATEER (@MCATEER4) February 27, 2013
McAteer played for Liverpool between 1995 and 1999 and also played international football for Republic of Ireland.
Do you agree with McAteer? Was Benitez right to stand up for himself?
