A round-up of news and views relating to Chelsea over the past 24 hours.
Rafa Benitez’s future is once again under the spotlight at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea lost 2-0 to Manchester City on Sunday, but Alan Hansen has argued in today’s Telegraph that the problems with the side go far deeper than the manager.
Juan Mata has said the side need to improve in matches against the other top sides in the league, and that the Blues didn’t do enough to deserve three points against Manchester City:
“The most important games are when you play against Man United, Man City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool — the best teams in the Premier League and you have to show that you are in this level.
“The job that we did against City wasn’t enough. We didn’t score, we didn’t get the three points, always when you play against teams like Man City you have to perform at your best.”
Gary Cahill has also said the side weren’t at their best against Manchester City, and admitted that the huge amount of fixtures Chelsea have played has taken its toll on their season leaving the players jaded.
After the weekend’s results, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said he believes his side can overtake Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur to claim second place in the Premier League this season.
Whilst Chelsea had a tough weekend, one of their players had a fantastic time netting a match-winning brace for West Bromwich Albion. However the future is still unclear for Romelu Lukaku, who says that Chelsea decide what will happen next season, and that he hopes to build a good career at Stamford Bridge.
On HITC today, Simon Bunn argues that Lukaku would score over 20 goals a season if given the chance at Chelsea. Also on HITC today, Lewis Doe looks at how Rafa Benitez might be the perfect manager for Real Madrid.
Reported Chelsea target Heung-Min Son is reportedly close to agreeing a new deal with German side Hamburg. The South Korean striker has been linked with a slew of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
In other transfer news, there has been speculation that Chelsea are keen to sign Southampton teenager Luke Shaw as a long term replacement for Ashley Cole. Arsenal are also rumoured to be interested in the player, who is valued at around £10 million. Chelsea have also been linked with Marouane Fellaini, and Dan Coombs argues that he could be just as good an addition as Falcao this summer.
Swansea top scorer Michu has urged Michael Laudrup reject reported interested from Chelsea and Real Madrid and stay at the Welsh club next season. The young manager has enjoyed an excellent first season in the Premier League, leading Swansea to the Capital One Cup at the weekend.
