Is Premier League target Adrian Lopez worth £15 million?

Atletico Madrid

The minimum Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal or Liverpool will have to pay for Adrian Lopez this summer is £15 million.

Adrian Lopez is being heavily linked with a move to the Premier League this summer with Spurs and Liverpool in the mix to sign the Spaniard. Arsenal were also linked in January.

His reputation as one of Spain's best up and coming strikers meant he was never going to be cheap and the minimum that any club will have to pay for him is £15 million, which will trigger the buy out clause in his current contract at Atletico Madrid.

A bid of around £14 million may be good enough to trigger the clause but the fee will be higher considering the attention in him.

That is a sum that either club will be willing to pay but considering his quality and the interest in him, that fee could quickly become a lot more expensive as a bidding war between all sides breaks out.

Atletico Madrid are having their best season in recent memory as they are the closest challengers to Barcelona in La Liga, 12 points off the Spanish giants in second place.

That means that regardless of his current form they will want to hang onto him, as Adrian remains a big prospect for the future. And it's on that note of current form where the concern peaks. He has one goal since the turn of the year; and all season just 3 in 20 games in La Liga. He has just a single Copa del Rey goal to add to that.

Four goals as a striker does not really jump out as a £15 million return, especially when at 25 he can no longer really be considered a 'hot prospect' but one who should be peaking.

Last season was more encouraging as he hit 20 goals, 10 in Atletico's Europa League winning run, but just 7 in 36 games came in La Liga. Nonetheless, a 20 goals in all competitions player is a very useful figure Arsenal, Spurs or Liverpool would like to have, and if he can recapture that goalscoring form he will be worth the money.

There’s no doubt that Spurs will get the edge in the battle to sign him if they can maintain their top four position in the Premier League, which will give them a shot at the Champions League next season.

However, the 25-year-old Spaniard is perfectly geared towards what Liverpool are trying to do at the moment which is create a very young and forward thinking side.

Brendan Rodgers uses a style of football which would appeal to someone like Lopez but the way the club is run financially, means they could quickly be priced out of things if the fee starts to head upwards.

Liverpool are not a club that seem as though they can afford to spend over £20 million on a player any more, and their wage structure means Lopez could get much better personal terms if he heads to North London.

Either way, the magic number here is that £15 million, a few which Arsenal were reportedly ready to spend earlier in the season.

The Gunners may even come back into the equation for Lopez’s signature but again, he may want guaranteed Champions League football which is not something any of these sides are guaranteed to give him at the moment.

Do you think he’ll come to the Premier League? If so, where? Is he worth the money?
