Swansea City should make long-term prospect Ben Davies a priority over Michu and Ashley Williams.
Ben Davies has been one of Swansea’s most consistent players this season and the 19-year-old could easily be courted by a bigger team this summer.
All of the talk is about players such as Michu and Ashley Williams leaving Swansea after may but the impact may be bigger for the side if Davies goes without a fight.
He is immensely important to the back four because he is one of the best young full backs in the Premier League. He’s almost invisible in the way that he just gets selected without anyone raising an eyebrow.
He’s started 23 matches for Swansea in the league this season with three appearances off the bench and he’s also grabbed a goal.
His discipline hasn’t been bad either as he’s only picked up two yellow cards this season which shows he’s not the sort of player who will go racing around the pitch, committing fouls and bringing pressure onto his team.
His age is also very significant because he has his whole career ahead of him. This will appeal to any team that wants to buy him because it will be more of an investment which will take care of an important full back slot.
A decent left back is not as readily available as a solid centre back or a centre forward who can score a few goals, therefore Davies is more of a rare commodity, making him more valuable to the club than many think or appreciate.
Fortunately for Swansea Michael Laudrup is no fool and knows the significance of having players like Davies in the team, players who know the identity of the club as well as bags of potential.
Davies looks like a player who is only going to get better over the rest of the season and the next few years, and Swansea will hope the player will want to repay the faith which has been shown in him over years to come.
Fingers crossed Swansea get Laudrup to stay on after this summer because if he leaves, it could be a lot easier for any side interested in Davies to tempt him away from the Liberty Stadium.
Swansea fans, what sort of season do you think Davies is having?
