Arsenal cannot allow Chuba Akpom to fade away without a first team run.
Arsenal and Arsene Wenger are under fire from all angles but the quality and consistency of their academy is something they have always been praised for.
In fact it’s so good that there are several teenagers currently in the academy and various youth teams who could do a job for the club over the next couple of seasons.
Chuba Akpom is one and the 17-year-old even has a squad number for the Gunners and is currently in their listed reserve squad. He scored another brace for Arsenal's under-21s in their 4-2 defeat to rivals Spurs on Saturday.
Akpom is a striker, an out and out front man who likes to lead the front line in any way possible. He’s got a good record at youth level and was playing for the Under-18 team when he was only 15.
He’s made ten Under-21 Premier League appearances this season with three goals and three assists. He’s also scored goals at a rate greater than one per game in friendlies; five goals in four matches.
Add to that the fact he’s playing Under-19 football for England and it becomes very easy to see why he’s in the Arsenal reserve squad.
The problem is he’s one in a very big group of quality youngsters Arsenal have. Youngsters who may not get a chance because of the pressure on the club and Wenger to bring in established stars as Arsenal look to get back to their glory days.
Arsenal are always going to have players who slip through the cracks because frankly, there are so many of them.
However, this lad seems to have something about him because he’s scoring goals in every team, tournament and competition he goes near at the moment.
The Gunners hold all of their power because he’s their player but as he gets a little bit older and his record becomes a little more consistent, the sharks are going to start circling which could make it impossible for them to keep him.
It’s all hearsay but he could do very well over the next couple of years if he’s blooded into the Arsenal first team via the League Cup or through another method.
However, one thing is for certain, they will regret it if they don't give him a first team run but surely Wenger is old enough and wise enough not to let that happen?
Arsenal fans, what do you think about his potential?
