Arsene Wenger believes the team can still finish in the Premier League’s top two despite their current struggles. They currently sit fifth in the table behind Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester City and face their North London rivals in a crunch derby on the 3rd March.

In the league Arsenal are on a three game winning streak so his optimism may not be as misguided as many think as he insisted that the fight for second spot would be a tight one between them and City.

Arsenal have announced their half year financial results with profits of £17.8 million; however that number relied heavily on player sales. The Gunners made £23.2 million in player sales after the sale of Robin Van Persie and Alex Song last summer.

Turnover had fell by £7.4 million to £106.1 million and the clubs operating profit fell to £5 million from the previous total of £15.2 million.

The wage bill has been one of the major factors behind the current expenditure and it is hoped the departures of Maraoune Chamakh, Andrey Arshavin, Andre Santos and Sebastien Squillaci may offset that problem somewhat in 2013.

The Daily Express has spoken of Arsenal’s potential summer signing Maxime Gonalons after he reportedly told Spanish press he could be open to a move away from Lyon this summer; as long as it was to a team from abroad. He expressed his admiration for the English and German leagues. The defensive midfielder has been in impressive form for Lyon this season and also has six caps for France.

Yesterday they also brought news of a potential battle emerging between Arsenal and Manchester United for the services of Yohan Cabaye of Newcastle United.

Thierry Henry could return to Arsenal in a coaching capacity this summer. The International Business Times believes that he will be offered a role coaching in the Arsenal youth academy. It will be stage one in a large shakeup of the youth academy at the club with the impending exit of Liam Brady and desire to get fresh blood in to the system such as Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira.

Per Mertesacker has been purring the praises of team-mate Santi Cazorla calling the Spaniard ‘the perfect footballer’ after his two goal salvo helped Arsenal overcome a resolute Aston Villa side at The Emirates on Saturday. The giant German was talking on the clubs official website.
