Zinedine Zidane was in attendance at the Stade Gerland on Thursday night and Spanish reports believe he may have been spying on Gareth Bale ahead of a summer move for the Welshman. Or there could be a much less sensational explanation to the story.
Gareth Bale has seen his stock raise significantly over the past couple of weeks after catching the eye in Europe once again with a superb double against Lyon in the Europa League. His magnificent pair of free-kicks really caught the eye and gave Spurs the edge heading into the second leg at Stade Gerland last night.
Such a performance is the type of swashbuckling display that struck fear into Spurs’ next opponent in the competition Inter Milan during their Champions League run a few seasons ago. It is also the type of performance that will attract big names to his potential signing; including the biggest of the big Real Madrid.
The side stole Luka Modric away from them last summer and it is believed that the Welsh winger will be their main transfer target this summer.
This makes the presence of one man in the Lyon crowd on Thursday night potentially ominous for Tottenham fans; as Los Merengues Director of Football Zinedine Zidane was in attendance.
According to MARCA the Spanish side's President listens to the opinion of the French legend with a keen ear and would be more than happy to gauge his opinion on Bale’s potential to be one of the world’s best.
Although he could very well have been taking in a game in his homeland, not to mention the fact that Zizou is currently undergoing his coaching badges at the club it has lead Spanish reports to suggest he was spying on Bale in order to compile a report on his transfer.
Coincidence or espionage? You decide?
