Daniele Gastaldello could be a great signing for Arsenal if Arsene Wenger wants to strengthen the back four this summer.
Arsenal are going to have a lot of re-building to do in the summer and fingers crossed this time it means more arrivals than departures.
One area which could do with a fresh face is the defence with the inconsistency of Per Mertesacker causing a widespread outbreak of self inflicted baldness around North London.
Daniele Gastaldello is a centre back currently playing for Sampdoria in Serie A and he could be just what Arsenal need for several reasons.
The first is his current salary, around one million Euros, and his fee. His salary means Arsenal don’t have to break their wage structure and his age, 29-years-old, means the club won’t have to spend over the top.
You may think Arsenal can now afford to do so considering their dominant financial position but it’s hard to believe Arsene Wenger is about to start shelling out millions for single players after years of doing the exact opposite.
Gastaldello has been booked ten times in 22 appearances for his club this season in the league. He’s been sent off once but that was for two yellow cards and not for a straight red.
This tells us that he’s a very aggressive defender and not afraid to sacrifice himself at key moments for the good of the team, whether that means he picks up a yellow card or not.
You may think Arsenal need someone who is calmer and has more experience in alongside whoever is still at the club next season.
However, this is a defender who has been at Sampdoria and in the side for the last six years and he’s represented Italy at four different levels so far during his time in professional football.
Arsenal could frankly, do a lot worse than giving this player a chance who would relish the opportunity to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world in what’s likely to be the last career move he’ll ever make.
If Arsenal go after Gastaldello or someone similar to him, and stop key defenders leaving, they will have one of the best pools of defensive players in the Premier League which allows the club to drive forward next year.
Arsenal fans, should a defender be your priority?
