Hugo Lloris has become the latest Premier League ‘keeper linked with a move to Barcelona.
Hugo Lloris is now the centre of attention for Barcelona, according to several online media reports.
Forget Pepe Reina and David De Gea heading off to the Nou Camp, it’s now apparently all about the Frenchman.
Believe it if you want but there are several things wrong with this rumour with the most obvious being the fact it’s never going to happen.
Lloris was signed last summer by Tottenham Hotspur as the long term replacement for Brad Friedel, you know, the 41-year-old American shot stopper.
For Spurs to sell Lloris now would defy logic and basic common sense so Tottenham fans needn’t worry about losing their new number one.
Granted, Lloris spoke of his frustration at the start of the season when he was failing to dislodge the American from the starting position, confined to the odd appearance in the Europa League.
However, Andre Villas-Boas has handled the transition very well and the roles now seem to have completely changed with Friedel warming the bench and Lloris getting the nod for the most important games.
Lloris now has 16 starts in the Premier League and is rapidly increasing his experience of English football, which would make it bizarre for Spurs to sell him just as he’s settling in.
Victor Valdes’ decision not to sign a new contract at Barcelona means whichever goalkeeper is in form in England, he is going to be linked with the Spanish giants.
In the same way Manchester United are never going to let De Gea leave as he’s so important to their future, Spurs will never allow Lloris to leave because of Friedel’s age.
However, funnier things have happened in football and if Barcelona come up with some stupid world record-esque fee for any goalkeeper in England, then that would be very hard to turn down.
The chances are though, that they won’t.
Spurs fans, how do you think Lloris has been playing?
