Arsenal should be very wary of making any approach for Barcelona full back Dani Alves.
Arsenal have been linked with Dani Alves of Barcelona following the news Arsene Wenger will reportedly have around £70 million to spend this summer.
It may seem like an attractive proposition for the club but there are several reasons why they should stay well clear of the Brazilian defender.
The club’s recent experience with Andre Santos suggests that out and out attacking full backs may not be the best thing for the club. There will be other full backs available who have much better defensive qualities.
Any move for Dani Alves would also test Arsenal’s socialist policy when it comes to wages and transfer fees. This is a player on a very tidy contract at Barcelona and he’ll be very unwilling to go anywhere else for less.
This point is very significant when considering that the national papers are also suggesting that the mega rich Anzhi would be interested in him, should he become available.
The fact Barcelona are so prolific in attack, with most of the focus and attention on their midfield and forward play can trick many into thinking Dani Alves is a better defender than he actually is.
It’s easy for a side to concede no goals when a team is camped inside their own half for the majority of 90 minutes.
There are also other areas of the Arsenal team which need greater attention and perhaps a little cash invested in players.
For example, Arsenal do need a wide man which will release either Lukas Podolski or Theo Walcott to play up front.
This will in itself save Arsenal from having to go out and buy another centre forward because they technically already have two. They’re just playing out of position.
Alves is also getting towards the latter stages of his career. He’s 29-years-old so Wenger would only bring him in for the same reason he bought Mikel Arteta; for experience.
He’s not of the age where he can fit in with the club’s long term plans, especially considering the number of younger players Arsenal have committed to them already.
Any Gunners out there, would you sign Dani Alves?
