Is Andreu Fontas good enough to block a move for Thomas Vermaelen?

Barcelona Goal

Fear not Arsenal fans, there’s an on loan Barca defender who could stop any move for Thomas Vermaelen.

Andreu Fontas is a 23-year-old centre back currently on loan at Real Mallorca in La Liga.

He is one of the many youngsters Barcelona currently own and is waiting for his first real opportunity to break into the first team at the Nou Camp.

All of the latest speculation has centred around the possible transfer of Thomas Vermaelen, Arsenal captain, to the Nou Camp but this lad may just be good enough to stop them thinking about such a deal.

There are two main reasons Barca are likely to give him a chance. Firstly, he’s played over 70 matches for the B team at the club and hasn’t been sold on.

Barcelona are a club laced with talent, if they didn’t think he was good enough to one day replace someone like Carles Puyol then they would have moved him on permanently by this point.

He’s also Catalonia through and through which means he understands and relates with the identity of the club. Promoting from within is the Barcelona way, as shown by the way they looked inwards to Tito Vilanova to take over from Pep Guardiola.

This upbringing means Barcelona are much more likely to pick him as a central defender for the first time, over going to a foreign country and a foreign team to find someone good enough.

His stats for Mallorca this season show six appearances without any goals, which may not sound impressive but Barca have also used him sparingly in their own first team with eight appearances to date.

There could well be a battle emerging over the next few seasons between Fontas and Raphael Varane of Real Madrid over who is the best young defensive prospect in Spain.

Could Fontas be a player Barcelona look to in the future?
