Could this possible transfer be an Allardyce master stroke?

West Ham Upton Park

Sam Allardyce could pull off a real bargain of a signing this summer if West Ham snap up Maynor Figueroa.

Maynor Figueroa is not the most elegant of defenders but to be quite frank, that’s not the reason West Ham United seem to be interested in him.

It also won’t bother Sam Allardyce one little bit if he is offered a new deal to stay at the club and is given the resources to make transfers like this one a reality.

West Ham would buy Figueroa to add even more strength, power and experience into the back four than they already have.

Timing doesn’t seem to be one of his main qualities as proven by the fact he’s picked up five yellow cards and one red card for Wigan this season, but again, that won’t matter to Allardyce.

The fact he’s an in your face type of defender, who once scored from well inside his own half, will matter more to Allardyce because that’s how he sets West Ham up to play and how he wants his players to act.

This guy could be overlooked for a defender who is signed with a multi-million pound transfer fee who has never played in the Premier League before.

Figueroa has been in English football since 2008 and he’s played well over 100 games for Wigan, experiencing the pressure that only comes along from being attached to a club constantly fending off the threat of Premier League relegation.

He could be an even better defender than many of us think but we’ll never find out until he’s given the chance to play in a team that has greater consistency and a little more quality than Wigan.

No disrespect to Wigan because they have made Figueroa the player he is today and they have given him a constant supply of football; 25 starts so far this Premier League season.

If West Ham fans feel a little sceptical upon reading this news then you simply have to back Allardyce and trust him to know the sort of player who suits the club and what he’s trying to achieve.

Figueroa is a good defender, a versatile defender and someone who has proven himself over a long time in the English game. He’ll also be cheap as he’s out of contract this summer which is important considering the financial axe which is about to drop on the division.

Hammers fans, Maynor Figueroa, want him or not?
