Arsenal were hopelessly outclassed by a Bayern Munich team that now have a Champions League quarter-final place in one hand as they lead 3-1 going into the second leg.
Szczesny: 5 – Needed to show a greater command of his defence which would have stopped them dropping so deep on top of him. Couldn’t do much about any of the goals.
Sagna: 6 – Got down the right wing well to provide support for the side when they went forward. Wasn’t tight enough defensively which left too much space.
Mertesacker: 5 – Not one of his best games in an Arsenal shirt. Has the ability to command the penalty area with his presence and power but failed to do so when Arsenal needed it.
Koscielny: 5 – Looks a little out of his depth against some of the bigger sides in the Premier League and Europe. A simple shout to Ramsey to hold his position would have prevented the first goal.
Vermaelen: 5 – He is not a left back and it showed as Bayern had success after success down that side of the pitch. Didn’t know whether to show players inside or down the line.
Arteta: 6 – Rarely gave the ball away when he had possession. Tried to sit in the middle and give Arsenal a little bit of authority against Kroos and Muller but was hopelessly outnumbered.
Wilshere: 7 – Arsenal’s best player by some distance. The only one prepared at times to run at Bayern and try to pierce his way through the middle of the team. Looked dangerous whenever he got on the ball.
Walcott: 5 – Never really got into the game due to some solid Bayern defensive work. They countered his pace by dropping a bit deeper and covering with an extra man.
Ramsey: 5 – Another who struggled against the quality of the opponents. Why he dropped so deep for the first goal is a mystery as he could have cut the ball out if he’d held his position.
Cazorla: 6 – Looked dangerous with the ball. Made some good forward runs and never really turned over possession, looks like a class player, just lacked that bit of support on the night.
Podolski: 6 – Looked dangerous at times but Bayern quickly found a way of muting his effectiveness. Subbed off in the second half as Arsenal needed a big target man.
Rosicky: 5 – Came on with 20 minutes to go but never had any more impact than the other central midfield players.
Giroud: 5 – Should have scored with his first touch, looked like a real threat but didn’t have the time to impose himself on the match.
