All of the speculation is pointing towards David Luiz leaving for the Nou Camp in the summer but how can Chelsea stop this from happening?
David Luiz can be one of the best defenders to watch at times but he can also be one of the most irritating.
Those curly golden locks flap around every time he sprints out of the defence with about as much discipline as a kid playing on the field at school.
However, at other times he’s old school, a proper defender who does the basics very well and that seems to be the reason Barca are after him.
The first, and most obvious way, Chelsea can keep him is by appointing the right manager in the summer.
David Luiz could be convinced to lead the Chelsea defence over heading to Spain if the right gaffer is appointed, but the appointment of the next permanent boss also has to be aimed at moving the club forward, not just one player.
Responsibility is something he clearly craves and something Chelsea can give him. He’s never going to be captain while John Terry is in the team but he could be captain every time he isn’t.
Brazil threw the captain’s armband to him for the recent friendly against England, so there’s no harm in Chelsea caving into his leadership abilities because they are actually very good.
They also need to be understanding and flexible with his position, as they already have been this season.
He looks like the sort of player who wants to get forward sometimes so there’s no harm in giving him a midfield role from time to time. The most important thing is that Chelsea don’t try and change his natural personality.
If they try and change him too much then it could easily result in him feeling pressured to move away from the club.
Consistent selection is also important because David Luiz is the sort of character who expects to be playing in every single game.
The rumours suggest Barca want him as an out and out centre back as they don’t need any cover in midfield positions. If Chelsea turn him into an even more important defender for them than he already is, it’ll make leaving all the more harder.
Chelsea fans, can you hang onto your Brazilian star?
