The mountain-biking defensive midfielder who may take a ride to Arsenal

Eintracht Frankfurt

Arsenal have been linked with a new target this week, by the player himself; Sebastian Rode.

Arsenal lost their captain last summer because his contract was ticking down, so they will be well aware that they too can turn the tables and do the same with potential targets.

Arsene Wenger likes to keep his transfer business on the 'down-low' as much as possible, as seen by the deadline day deal for Nacho Monreal which nobody had seen coming.

One such target who may just have let the cat out of the bag yesterday is Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Sebastian Rode, who claimed he was aware of the Gunners' interest in him but is happy in Germany 'for now'.

For now being the short-term, because his contract has just 18 months to run. Frankfurt are the Bundesliga's surprise package, riding high in fourth, after being promoted the season prior, and Rode has caught the eye.

Bayern Munich are also credited with interest, with Rode commenting on the Gunners planned swoop; "The interest is known to me. I'll keep my feet on the ground and not start dreaming, Eintracht Frankfurt and I have agreed to postpone the talks so to concentrate on the football."

He is exactly the sort of player who should be interesting Arsenal, he is 22, and a now former German under-21 international who can't be far away from the national team, and is valued relatively cheaply at around £6 million.

Rode is the type of player who loves sport, and has the stamina to play in his position; he says on his personal website that he likes to spend his summers mountain-biking, that's when he's not playing FIFA or watching films, two of his other favourite past times.

This season Rode has made 21 Bundesliga appearances, while he hasn't scored and has provided just one assist, it isn't his job to. His role is to protect the back four and allow teammates such as the creative Stefan Aigner do the exciting work.

Arsenal are in need of a defensive midfielder and Rode may just fit the bill; after Alex Song left the Gunners have been linked with players from Yann M'Vila to Mohamed Diame, and even had a reported deadline day bid for Ettien Capoue turned down by Toulouse.

The Gunners would look to add him to fellow Germans Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker as well as youngsters Thomas Eisfeld and Serge Gnabry.

For Frankfurt, Rode has completed an average of three successful tackles per game, higher than any Arsenal midfielder with the exception of Mikel Arteta. His interception's another key asset for a defensive midfielder, are an average of 2.4 per game, again bettering every Arsenal player except for the Spaniard.

While it could be easy to say Arteta is therefore better, it should be remembered he is 30 while Rode is 22, so surely there would be room for both?

As Arsenal take on Bayern next week, the keenest observer could be Rode, with the two clubs interesting in him facing off, it's a perfect chance to take a look at his next prospective destinations.

Check him out in action...

Would Rode be a good signing for Arsenal?
