AVB thanks his lucky stars Dawson stuck around

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has admitted he’s glad the club didn’t sell Michael Dawson to QPR.

Michael Dawson is currently one of the most important players at Spurs. He’s turned himself into one of the first choice defenders at the club after they nearly sold him last August.

AVB gave Dawson permission to start talks with QPR over a move after Spurs accepted a £9 million bid from the Premier League strugglers.

However, Dawson rejected the possible move vowing to stay and fight for his place in the side and it’s turned out to be a good decision all round and something that manager seems extremely grateful for.

“Yes. I think we appreciate the fact we were able to hang on to him. We ended up being on the better side by the fact he agreed to stay with us. We were lucky in that sense, said Villas-Boas.

So how has Dawson turned things around at Tottenham?

Well he’s been a little lucky to begin with due to the long term injury to Younes Kaboul which has kept the big centre back out of the side.

He’s also been aided by the fact William Gallas is getting any younger at 36-years-old which means Dawson has received regular chances to play through squad rotation.

He’s come good on his promise to fight for his place and produce some consistency with 11 starts in the Premier League so far and four appearances off of the subs bench.

He’s also given the manager an option in the Europa League and he’s scored a goal in Europe. This has allowed AVB to keep all of his defender fit and fresh as Spurs go for glory on a European stage.

Dawson is also a big leader within the Tottenham squad and team and his leadership skills have proved vital in close matches where he’s played a prominent role.

AVB has confirmed that Spurs will not be starting with five centre backs on their books ahead of next season and Dawson may have been the player axed, had he not turned around his form.

As it stands he’s probably in the bottom group of players Spurs would allow to leave with Gallas being tipped for a departure long before the 29-year-old.

Spurs fans, are you glad you hung onto him?
