Five players who can damage Tottenham Hotspur in Europa League tie with Lyon

Who are the five players to keep an eye on when Spurs face Lyon this week?

Dangerous players for Lyon article without a Gourcuff in sight. The talented Frenchman has returned from injury but has not yet made enough of a mark to warrant selection but that does not mean that Lyon do not have considerable talent to hurt Spurs and former goalkeeper Hugo Lloris on Thursday night.

They come into the game in bad form with two 3-1 losses on the bounce in Ligue 1 so Spurs will either feel a backlash or take on a team currently struggling. So if it is to be the former who will lead the Lyon charge?

Bafetimbi Gomis

Big, strong, powerful and good in front of goal this French international will certainly throw his weight around the Tottenham backline in the tie. He was linked with moves away this January due to his good form but he stayed with Lyon; in fact it was even suggested Spurs might try sign him in late January.

With 16 goals in 29 games he will be the French sides’ main danger man.

Steed Malbranque

A familiar name Malbranque was a permanent fixture in the Premier League for many years before reportedly retiring to look after a non-existent terminally ill son while at St Etienne.

In fact he was simply taking a break and he has come back a far more exquisite player.

Playing in the holding midfield role he has been the clubs standout player and leading creator of goal scoring opportunities with eight assists in all competitions. We ran a feature on him not long ago and he will have to be stopped if Spurs are to topple the French side.

Lisandro Lopez

The Argentine may currently have a bit of a cob on due to not being allowed to leave the club in January; with Spurs and Juve the main objects of his affection; but he remains a dangerous player.

He has become disillusioned at playing from the left but unfortunately for him it seems such a fate will once again befall him against Spurs.

If he doesn’t have a sulk on he could be deadly.

Maxime Gonalons

Sitting alongside Malbranque will be Gonalons who has been another one of Lyon’s star performers this season. The 23-year-old is a French international and was recently made captain of the team and he will be vital to stopping the likes of Gareth Bale, Moussa Dembele or Lewis Holtby getting control of this game.

Samuel Umtiti

The Cameroon born French youth international has had a breakthrough season this year and again has been one of their shining lights. Capable at both centre-back and left-back he may be used out wide to counter-act the pace of Aaron Lennon down the Spurs right hand side.

Who do you think will be Tottenham’s biggest threat for Lyon?
