Has Papiss Cisse been a disappointment this season?

Newcastle United had the 'buy of the season' last January, but Papiss Cisse simply has not been the same this time around.

Newcastle fans and neutrals took great delight in Papiss Cisse's sensational scoring form after his switch from Freiburg last January.

He scored 13 goals in 14 Premier League games, helping Newcastle finish fifth, and among them were some world class strikes, namely the brace at Stamford Bridge.

While this was tempered slightly by Demba Ba's loss of form, scoring just once after his arrival, he gave Newcastle fans plenty of reasons to be cheerful.

At one stage there was even talk of £25 million bids for him from the Manchester clubs and Chelsea, speculation which is a sort of inevitable price of success.

A year on and his stock has fallen somewhat, in fact it's fair to say Cisse has been a shadow of the electric striker who lit up the Premier League last season.

He has scored a total of seven goals, a modest if not terrible figure, in a total of 30 games. That's one League Cup appearance, 24 Premier League matches and five Europa League games.

His last goal was the opener away to Aston Villa in the 2-1 win, a sign he could be revitalised by the Toon's latest batch of foreign recruits.

Like all Newcastle's players, his form has dropped off this year as the team has struggled with injuries, and one of the key reasons for his dip in form has been the fact key creator Yohan Cabaye has been injured for a large chunk of the season, although fortunately he has now returned.

Don't get us wrong, Cisse is plodding along alright, and will score goals between now and the end of the season; it's what he does. He may even have a big upturn in fortunes and go on a scoring run, it's what he needs.

Now Demba Ba has left there is no longer a conundrum over where to play the pair of them; as they failed to gel together on a consistent basis which saw them both score.

But perhaps we just expected more from Cisse, perhaps that was wrong, to expect him to carry on his sensational exploits of last season, which would always be difficult to replicate on a consistent basis.

It just seems as though the striker is not the same one who was an unstoppable force last season - Most would have expected him to be in double figures by now. Hopefully he can get back those displays, because Newcastle could do with him regaining that form to help them re-climb the table.

What do you think? Has Cisse been disappointing this season? Is it his fault?
