Whichever way you look at it, Liverpool need midfield protection in the form of a heavy, strong and aggressive player ahead of next season.
Liverpool have formed a very positive and stylish team under Brendan Rodgers. However, it’s also a very small team and could use protection in the form of someone in the Cheik Tiote mould, but less expensive.
Josue of Wolfsburg
Josue is slightly older at 33-years-old and he could be tempted into one final big move before the end of his career. He’s a defensive midfield player so his job would be more to protect the centre backs than to cause midfield chaos. His age means his fee should be something Liverpool can afford.
Karim Guede of Hamburg
Karim Guede is a Slovakian international who plays in the heart of the Hamburg midfield. He’s a bit more aggressive and his size, six feet tall, means he can but an imposing figure in the middle of any team. He could be useful for Liverpool in terms of protecting players like Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho.
Youssuf Mulumbu of West Brom
Liverpool saw first hand last night how important a player like Mulumbu can be, offering protecting to West Brom's back four. With him in the side, the Baggies are a side transformed, and the Reds could look to reap a similar benefit from the 26-year-old.
Daniele Conti of Cagliari
Conti is similar to Josue of Wolfsburg in the respect that he’s older at 34, which is something that could put Liverpool off. He wouldn’t cost a great deal and he’s very effective in terms of breaking up opposition attacks. However, he’s never left Italy in his career having only played for Roma and Cagliari.
Sambou Yatabare of Bastia
This guy is more what Liverpool will be looking for; tall, quick, strong and only 23-years-old so he fits into the Liverpool philosophy of signing younger players. He’s currently with SC Bastia which again, shouldn’t trouble Liverpool too much in terms of a potential fee and he’s already played multiple times for Mali.
Mohamed Diame of West Ham
Liverpool almost signed Diame last summer, but the move fell through when Kenny Dalglish was sacked. Since then he has enhanced his reputation as an enforcer at West Ham, and he would only cost £3.5 million thanks to a release clause in his contract. Diame said previously he was keen on a move, so this one should be a no-brainer.
Willem Janssen of FC Twente
Janssen could be seriously interested in a move to the Premier League which will give him the chance to see if he can cut it in the English game. He’s only 26-years-old, is just over six feet tall and has a reputation in the Netherlands for being the sort of player who goes around sticking his foot in.
Or... there is Jay Spearing...
