There have been some very mixed views on some individual performances at Anfield during the 2-0 defeat to West Brom.... but what is your opinion?
Liverpool’s poor form against teams in the top half of the Premier League continued Monday night as they were beaten by a smash-and-grab performance by West Brom at Anfield. Goals against the run of play from Gareth McCauley and Romelu Lukaku proved enough to take the three points and leapfrog Liverpool in the Premier League table.
The result was incredibly harsh on a Liverpool side who dominated vast swathes of the game and saw Ben Foster in imperious form in the opposite goal; including making a brilliant penalty save from Steven Gerrard.
The team selection for the game however drew some attention on social media as Brendan Rodgers decided to give Jonjo Shelvey a recall and shifted Jordan Henderson out on to the wing; a decision which received widespread criticism.
In fact the words ‘Shelvey and Henderson’ were already trending on Twitter before the two were hauled off by Rodgers in the second half as Liverpool fans begged for that very substitution. While sympathy was scarce for Shelvey who simply had a poor game many Liverpool fans had a degree of consideration for Henderson; who after some recent good form was shifted out of position for the former Charlton man’s accommodation.
These were not the only questions raised however as others wondered why Stewart Downing was brought off despite what many felt was a decent performance while there was also discontent at the decision to start a clearly not match-fit Lucas Leiva and a degree of shared embarrassment for Joe Allen at his recent fall from grace.
With one eye on the Zenit St Petersburg game on Thursday you can understand the need to tinker for Rodgers and in that respect a degree of blame has to lie at the FA’s door.
Yet it has not stopped hoards of talk on the matter from spreading across Twitter…but what did you make of it all?
If Shelvey wants to play for lfc he has to work as hard as Henderson and downing to get in the side. Being young doesn't get you in the side— Bruce Wayne (@marcusk1994) February 11, 2013
#Lfc Substitutions changed the game Shelvey needed to go off - poor game But lost Henderson and Downing - who both performed well— Coxy (@Thecoxs) February 11, 2013
Rodgers made some key mistakes tonight. Shelvey made him change formation and then taking off Henderson whose been a top performer recently— Carl Wrigley (@CWriggers) February 11, 2013
Shelvey can't moan about not getting picked again came in and was really poor don't think replacing Henderson was the correct move either— James Hollyoak (@JH86) February 11, 2013
That game needed one substitution, Shelvey off Coutinho on. Downing and Henderson were playing well. #LFC— RayMangan (@RayMangan) February 11, 2013
Putting Shelvey in there and moving Henderson left was just a bizarre decision. Shelvey didn't link at all and Hendo never a wide man #lfc— Stephen Whalley (@StevoLFC05) February 12, 2013
If you can't get in the team before Henderson and shelvey you have to be regretting your decision to sign! #joeallen— John Hughes (@JohnBongoHughes) February 11, 2013
Someone just said Henderson and Shelvey should be in the England Team ! You really really couldn't make it up !— Ashley Burton (@ashb67) February 11, 2013
We will not compete with the top teams as long as we have players like Borini, Henderson, Shelvey, Allen, Skrtel, Wisdom and Sterling...— Nik ✨ (@NikTarr) February 11, 2013
