Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Shelvey and Henderson performances

Liverpool FC - Seeing Is Believing - Jordan Henderson

There have been some very mixed views on some individual performances at Anfield during the 2-0 defeat to West Brom.... but what is your opinion?

Liverpool’s poor form against teams in the top half of the Premier League continued Monday night as they were beaten by a smash-and-grab performance by West Brom at Anfield. Goals against the run of play from Gareth McCauley and Romelu Lukaku proved enough to take the three points and leapfrog Liverpool in the Premier League table.

The result was incredibly harsh on a Liverpool side who dominated vast swathes of the game and saw Ben Foster in imperious form in the opposite goal; including making a brilliant penalty save from Steven Gerrard.

The team selection for the game however drew some attention on social media as Brendan Rodgers decided to give Jonjo Shelvey a recall and shifted Jordan Henderson out on to the wing; a decision which received widespread criticism.

In fact the words ‘Shelvey and Henderson’ were already trending on Twitter before the two were hauled off by Rodgers in the second half as Liverpool fans begged for that very substitution. While sympathy was scarce for Shelvey who simply had a poor game many Liverpool fans had a degree of consideration for Henderson; who after some recent good form was shifted out of position for the former Charlton man’s accommodation.

These were not the only questions raised however as others wondered why Stewart Downing was brought off despite what many felt was a decent performance while there was also discontent at the decision to start a clearly not match-fit Lucas Leiva and a degree of shared embarrassment for Joe Allen at his recent fall from grace.

With one eye on the Zenit St Petersburg game on Thursday you can understand the need to tinker for Rodgers and in that respect a degree of blame has to lie at the FA’s door.

Yet it has not stopped hoards of talk on the matter from spreading across Twitter…but what did you make of it all?
