How Edinson Cavani could scupper a summer Tottenham move for Leandro Damiao

Brazil V S Korea Damiao Number 9

The Napoli forward is highly wanted with Manchester City and Chelsea in the running; and Napoli may look to replace him with the Brazilian international. Which is all bad news for Tottenham Hotspur ... or is it?

It is little or no secret that Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas Boas has long been an admirer of Brazilian international Leandro Damiao. The Internacional striker is everything you want from a front-line goalscorer. He is strong, fast, elegant and most of all lethal in front of goal.

However the idea of signing him has been made consistently more complicated by the fact his contract rights are not independently owned by the Brazilian club. Instead, like many of the biggest names playing in Brazil currently, his ownership is split between numerous parties including his former team Atletico Ibirama. Considering the current strict rules relating to third-owner partnership in the Premier League Spurs’ supremo Daniel Levy was not willing to sign off on any deal until these issues could be ironed out.

Now however it appears they may be too late; and a few of their Premier League rivals could indeed contribute to the downfall of this deal.

Manchester City and Chelsea are going to be two of the biggest sharks in the transfer market this summer as it seems both are on course for relatively disappointing seasons. With Chelsea carrying Fernando Torres they only have Demba Ba in regards to a front-line striking option. Manchester City on the other hand lost Mario Balotelli this winter and would like to increase their options considering the slightly doubtful future of Carlos Tevez; and because well they have the money to do so and why the hell not?

Now there is only enough Falcao for one team and with PSG also in the running someone is going to have to sniff elsewhere if they want to bring in a goalscoring superhuman for upward of £50 million. This is where Leandro Damiao comes in, not because any of them will buy him, but because he may well be the perfect replacement for their backup target; Edinson Cavani.

The Napoli forward is also expected to potentially court a move away in the summer and Napoli may see Damiao as a perfect replacement. Internacional are lining up a bid for Nilmar this summer which would leave them the space to move Damiao on and he has previously expressed a desire to play in Serie A with Napoli:

“Serie A is a League that I really like and I’d love to play in it. Napoli play very entertaining football and I really appreciate the way Walter Mazzarri’s team approaches the sport.’’

So it all seems set then for a perfect merry-go-round of strikers this summer. Atletico sell Falcao and the team who misses out buy Cavani; Internacional buy Nilmar and Damiao goes to Napoli. The only team who loses out is Spurs.

Or not as there is more to Damiao’s desire to play in Italy with Partenopei:

‘’It would be spectacular to partner Cavani.’’

Maybe it is not so straight forward after all?
