Former Chelsea star slams Abramovich

Roman Abramovich

Former Chelsea defender Dan Petrescu has blamed the club’s owner Roman Abramovich for the club’s current position.

Dan Petrescu worked hard as a Chelsea defender, back in the days where hard work was one of the only ways to drive your side forward and become a club legend to the point where your name is still sung today.

When he talks, a lot of Chelsea fans sit up and listen and the Romanian has placed all of the blame for the club’s shortcomings this season firmly onto the shoulders of the club’s owner.

The benefit of reflection is a wonderful thing but Petrescu has suggested that decision to get rid of Roberto Di Matteo is possibly the worst decision Roman Abramovich has made since he bought Chelsea.

“I think Abramovich made a wrong decision because Roberto is a really good guy who deserved to stay. He was a good player and everyone could see that he did a great job at the club. I'm really sorry for him and I hope he'll find his place in football,” said Petrescu.

It’s this sympathy which still lingers around Stamford Bridge today as the fans are forced to accept a manager they did not want and have already seen Pep Guardiola, one of their favourites for the job go to another club, Bayern Munich.

Whichever way you look at it, it was a horrendous decision by the owner and one that has worked against him in a big way.

Chelsea are now under massive pressure to appoint the right manager this summer because at the moment they are way off the Premier League pace of the two Manchester clubs and they fell flat on their faces in their Champions League defence.

They could do a lot worse than going back to Di Matteo and trying to get him to re-sign in the summer but Abramovich has never been one to undermine himself at his club.

This is also the main reason why a return for Jose Mourinho is very unlikely and something that will put David Moyes off, a manager who enjoys complete control and authority at Everton.

Abramovich has made Chelsea one of the most unappealing clubs for any coach in global football. This is simply because you can win the Champions League, be within touching distance of the top of the league and you will still get booted out.

Petrescu played in the days where there was no vast wealth at Chelsea and he is saying what Chelsea fans have been saying all season long.
