Edin Dzeko and four other strikers Arsenal should target

Torres V Arsenal 2

Arsenal are expected to sign another striker in the summer, but who will it be?

Arsenal fan Thomas Williamson writes with five suggestions, including a controversial pick of Fernando Torres.

Here they are...

The forward has had an astonishing first season in English football, scoring 15 league goals to date. His finishing and coolness in one on ones with the keeper is just the sort of thing the team needs. Michu would probably be interested in a move if Arsenal could offer Champions League football and the chance to win the highest honours, with a bid of £10 million perhaps enough to persuade Swansea to sell. However with Swansea on the up as a team it may prove hard to persuade them to part with him.

Papiss Cisse

Cisse made a storming start to his career in English football, scoring 14 goals in 13 games, including a wonder strike against Chelsea. Like Michu he could probably be tempted by the allure of Champions League football, and would arrive at the peak of his career. The Magpies would perhaps be reluctant to sell after losing Demba Ba to Chelsea, unless they can find an adequate replacement. Also, Ba has struggled in his second season scoring five in twenty four, suggesting his first season was perhaps a one-off.

David Villa

This is just the sort of marquee signing many believe Arsenal need. Villa brings experience of playing at the highest level for club and country, something that could boost Arsenal’s younger players. He allegedly wants the move, but is this just baseless press speculation? His negatives are that he has had injury problems, and would force the club to break its policy of only giving one year deals to those over 30. Also, can Arsenal compete with Manchester City and Chelsea if they become interested?

Edin Dzeko

This one is probably reliant on Manchester City staging a summer clear out after failing to win the league. The Bosnian is apparently unhappy at being mostly used as a substitute. He brings proven Premier League goal-scoring credentials, as well as scoring late goals in matches where the team has not played well. This signing would almost certainly be dependent on Champions League qualification and the club being in the hunt for silverware. Arsenal will also struggle to persuade City to sell to another English club, when there is sure to be interest from other clubs in Europe.

Fernando Torres

Could the Spaniard get back to his best form if he leaves Chelsea? Has he simply got a mental block on scoring at Chelsea? Perhaps, but probably not. This would be a big gamble, but one if it came off would reap big rewards. It is unlikely to happen because of Arsenal’s conservatism and Chelsea’s desire to recoup a significant amount of the fee they paid.

Which of these would be best for Arsenal? Could they get Torres firing or is he 'beyond repair'?
