There is a very clear and obvious target Newcastle can go after who will take a world of pressure away from Yohan Cabaye.
Jamel Saihi has the worst disciplinary record in France’s Ligue 1 so far this season having been booked on five occasions and also having been shown two red cards.
He doesn’t mess around and he sits in the Montpellier midfield with a very clear and obvious job, which is to run around, cause havoc and break up the player whether he does it fairly or not.
Newcastle have been crippled this season by their over reliance on Yohan Cabaye, a calm and creative player in their midfield who needs protection in he form of someone who will literally protect him through a match.
Newcastle’s expertise in the French transfer market means that Saihi is a player they can go after and the number of French speaking players at the club means the Moroccan wouldn’t have to make too many changes in terms of every day life.
The problem here is that Newcastle need to drastically improve their position if they want to have any chance of signing players of this calibre. After all, Saihi one the Ligue 1 title with Montpellier last season and played Champions League football this season.
A move to Newcastle may be considered a step backwards by a lot of people in French football but the club is perfectly suited to let him do what he loves doing, and there is a clear need for him in the current side.
Montpellier need him for the exact same reasons so when Newcastle scout in France this summer, they need to get the feelers out there as quickly as possible about a move to the North East in England.
Any fee involved will be a lot larger than what Newcastle paid last month; just under £12 million for three players, but it’s a fee that Newcastle should be able to pay without drastically damaging the finances of the club.
There will also be out there who suggest that Newcastle need another striker more than they need another midfield man, especially with Cheick Tiote in the side doing a similar job.
However, if Newcastle sign Saihi then make no mistake about it, they will have one of the most dynamic and aggressive midfields to play against in England and it could allow Cabaye and Tiote to become even more effective than they already are.
What do you make of him Newcastle fans?
