Arsenal latest: Including Santos loan and Vermaelen surgery concerns

Vermaelen High Ball

All the news and gossip from The Emirates.

Andre Santos has completed his move to Gremio on loan until the end of the season. The Brazilian international has been lambasted in recent months for his performances at the club and Arsenal were more than happy to move him on. The Brazilian outfit were after a replacement for Fabio Aurelio after the former Liverpool full-back suffered an injury. The clubs other target was Emiliano Insua but he moved to Atletico Madrid instead; and after the signing of Nacho Monreal Arsene Wenger was happy to let him go.

The Daily Mail has reported that the injury concerns over Thomas Vermaelen are become more serious than previously thought. The Belgian has been given a course of anti-inflammatory injections in the hope of avoiding surgery. With Andre Santos on his way out of the club, Kieran Gibbs injured and Nacho Monreal cup-tied it leaves Arsenal struggling with left-backs for the game with Bayern Munich in a weeks’ time.

Arsenal are set to bring in young Brazilian midfielder Indio on trial. The 16-year-old Brazilian youth international is currently on the books at Vasco de Gama but is set to be given the chance to impress the hierarchy at The Emirates. He will not be able to sign for the club until 2014; when he turns 18.

Arsene Wenger still believes that Tottenham are within their sights in the hunt for Champions League football. The Gunners remain four points behind their North London rivals who are currently on a ten game unbeaten streak. Wenger could also be buoyed by the fact that this time last year Tottenham held a ten-point advantage over Arsenal before a poor run of form saw them finish below Arsenal in the Premier League.

Long term Arsenal target Aymen Abdennour has dealt a blow to any chance of him one day signing for the North-London club. The Toulouse defender has been catching the eye of Arsenal scouts for the past two seasons but he insists his dream is to one day play for Barcelona. The Tunisian international can play at both left-back and centre-back so would be perfect for the current needs at The Emirates.

A similar style of player has however kept the door open for a move to The Emirates this summer. The Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta has reportedly turned down a big-money move to an unnamed Russian club this week. Liverpool and Everton are also keen.
