Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson should give Frank Lampard whatever he wants to join the club at the end of the season.
Frank Lampard is arguably in the best form of his life, routinely scoring for Chelsea and demonstrating that he still has solid value at international level with England.
Chelsea are yet to move on a new contract and they may still stay stubborn and refuse to offer one of their best players a new deal which means a team such as United could approach him before a transfer at the end of the season.
United have to replace Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs at some point and although Lampard is not a young player, he still has a couple of years on both of those United legends.
He is almost an exact replica of Scholes in the respect of his experience, his efficiency in terms of goalscoring and the fact that he can sit in the middle of a team and pick off counter attacks.
He’s the same sort of calibre of player in terms of the reputation he holds in the game and the presence he has on the pitch. Something which compliments the way United have been playing football so far this season.
He would also offer United a unique set of skills which they don’t already have in the respect that he has different set piece ability. He has his own way of hitting long shots and taking free kicks which has worked for him throughout his career.
While United will be looking for someone similar to Scholes and Giggs, it will also be very important to Ferguson that he can bring something different in which he doesn’t already have in the squad.
Needless to say his experience is also something that will help some of the younger players at United, similarly to the way Patrick Vieira helped Manchester City when he joined them at the end of his career before staying on.
The problem United face is convincing him to join which would mean playing against Chelsea at some point, something he would most likely want to avoid.
In terms of the cash United can offer him just as competitive a deal as any other side that will be in for him at the end of the season.
Lampard could also be tempted to Old Trafford because it would mean a guaranteed chance to compete for all silverware each season and he could time it so he goes out of the game around the same time as Sir Alex Ferguson.
There is no point in United trying to position themselves to sign Lampard now because if Chelsea offer him any sort of deal then he’s most likely going to jump at the chance to sign it, regardless of terms.
United fans, would you want Lampard?
