Barcelona star: 'I spoke to Rio Ferdinand and the team's in great shape'

Manchester United have been given a vote of confidence ahead of their tie with Real Madrid, by a former player.

Former Manchester United defender Gerard Pique has made it crystal clear who he will be backing when his old club take on Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique, who spent four years at Old Trafford, is of course rooting for Manchester United.

As a key defender for Real's bitter rivals, it is little surprise the 26-year-old is hoping his old club can inflict further misery on Madrid, who lie 13 points below Barcelona in La Liga.

Pique has also revealed he has been chatting to former teammate Rio Ferdinand, still a key defender for the Red Devils.

He told Marca: "I'd like United to go through because of my history. I spoke to Ferdinand and the team's in great shape".

He's right; United are in excellent health right now, as illustrated by their defeat of Everton today, a game they were unable to win last season.

Their gap at the top of the Premier League, 12 points, is greater than Barcelona's in La Liga, who lead Atletico Madrid by nine, with Real further behind in third.

Yet it's not all about points, Real too are showing signs of revival, despite their embarassing loss to Grenada a week ago.

In the last month they have beaten Valencia 5-0, Getafe 4-0, and Sevilla 4-1 on Saturday night, with Ronaldo getting a hat-trick.

Back in 2008 when United last won the Champions League, Pique and Ronaldo were both Red Devils.

Since then Pique has twice had the laugh over United, after being sold to Barcelona, he was part of the team which beat them in both the 2009 and 2011 finals.

It remains to be seen whether Ronaldo will have similar success. We can't wait to find out.

What are your predictions for Wednesday's game?
