Liverpool latest: Including Carragher retirement and Borini

Carragher Defends

News, views and gossip related to Liverpool over the past 24 hours.

The big news out of Liverpool today is 35-year-old Jamie Carragher announcing he is to retire at the end of the season.

He told the club's website: "This will be my last season at Liverpool and my last as a professional footballer.

"I'm making this announcement now because I don't want the manager or the club to be answering questions on my future when I've already decided what I am going to do."

Brendan Rodgers maintain the defender, who has recently forced his way back into the first team, still has an important role to play between now and the end of the season, adding: "Jamie has been absolutely outstanding for me since I joined the club."

The good news looking to the future is Coutinho, with photos in the Mail of him training in a Liverpool kit ahead of their forthcoming fixture with West Brom on Monday.

Fabio Borini also scored the winner for Italy's under-21 side in a 1-0 friendly victory over Germany last night. However reports out of Italy have claimed Fiorentina are negotiating with the player's representatives to try to sign him in the summer. He has so far scored just one goal for the Reds, while the Italian club are also interested in former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.

We have taken a look at Jonjo Shelvey's quotes earlier in the week, where the media claimed he had moaned about being a 'scapegoat' for the Reds mixed form prior to their recent revival - But did he actually say that? Click here for the lowdown.

Dinamo Moscow have declared they rejected an advance from Liverpool to loan Hungarian winger Balazs Dzsudzsak in the transfer window, but said they would only consider a permanent transfer and 'immediately ended negotiations.'

Liverpool have potentially been given a boost by the fact the Premier League has voted in favour of Financial Fair Play. Chelsea and Manchester City are expected to have trouble with the proposals which aim to level the playing field, and should boost the Reds chances of on-pitch success.
