Manchester United have been linked with signing Robert Lewandowski this summer, and with the striker expected to move on, wouldn't it be a story if one of their former players replaced him? Well that may just happen...
Even with the international break, the big topic of news in Germany has been the future of Bundesliga star Robert Lewandowski.
The Pole will have just one year remaining on his contract at Borussia Dortmund this summer, and is showing no signs of renewing.
This season he has already scored 19 goals for his club, and looks a lock to score 30 for the second season in succession.
Manchester United have long been linked with his signature, and despite splashing out £24 million on Robin van Persie in the summer and having an array of other options, the rumours have only strengthened about a switch later this summer.
However this week, developments have taken a fresh twist, with the latest club linked with his signature being Bayern Munich.
Bayern are top of the Bundesliga, 12 points ahead of Lewandowski's Dortmund, but lack a 'big name' forward in attack, with Mario Gomez playing a marginal role this season due to injury and is expected to be moved on.
Much is dependent on the plans of future manager Pep Guardiola, with names like Neymar and David Villa mentioned, but Lewandowski appears to be the front-runner.
Dortmund are naturally said to be hedging their bets and looking at potential replacements, and a familiar name has cropped up; Mame Biram Diouf.
German newspaper Bild claims Diouf features prominently on their shortlist of Lewandowski successors, and looking at his record since leaving United it's little wonder why.
Having scored just one goal for United, against Burnley, he never really got a chance having signed from Norwegian club Molde. After a year on loan at Blackburn he never broke through at Old Trafford and moved on last January for Hannover 96.
He said he instigated the move to keep his career on the right path, rather than sitting in United's reserves, and he has done just that.
This season he has scored 13 goals in 22 games for Hannover, including 3 in 4 Europa League games, following on from the 10 in 15 he scored after signing last season.
The move to United was simply too soon for the Senegalese international, and has certainly done well to establish himself in one of Europe's top leagues.
A move to Dortmund would confirm that and be a logical step up for him, he is now a proven Bundesliga goalscorer and at 25-years-old has plenty left in him.
The question is whether the man he replaces will be heading to Old Trafford, or Bayern Munich.
