8. 1984 - Astronaut Bruce McCandless unhooks a lifeline and becomes the first human to fly free in space

9. 1990 - The Communist Party of the Soviet Union allows other parties to compete for power

10. 2005 - Britain's Ellen MacArthur becomes the fastest person to sail solo around the world

11. 2010 - The New Orleans Saints' Super Bowl win over the Indianapolis Colts becomes the most watched TV program in U.S. history
