1. 1923 - Archaeologist Howard Carter enters the sealed burial chamber of the ancient Egyptian ruler King Tutankhamun

2. 1959 - Cuba's revolutionary leader Fidel Castro becomes the country's youngest ever Premier

3. 1959 - Tennis player John McEnroe is born

4. 1970 - Joe Frazier begins his reign as the undefeated heavyweight world champion when he knocks out Jimmy Ellis in five rounds

5. 1972 - Most parts of Britain are suffering with loss of electricity for up to 9 hrs per day due to a miner's strike now in it's sixth week

6. 1985 - George Michael's Careless Whisper reaches No.1 in the US singles chart

7. 1989 - Investigators in Lockerbie, Scotland, say a Semtex bomb and an electronic timer hidden inside a Toshiba radio cassette player in a case in the cargo hold had brought down Pan Am Flight 103 the previous December. The bomb killed all 259 people aboard and 11 on the ground

8. 1998 - At the Brit Awards, Danbert Nobacon of Chumbawamba dumps a bucket of ice water on the U.K.'s Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott

9. 1999 - O.J. Simpson's 1968 Heisman Trophy is sold for $230,000 to help settle a $33.5m civil judgement against Simpson for the deaths of his ex-wife and her friend

10. 2005 - The Kyoto accord, which aims to curb the air pollution blamed for global warming, comes into force seven years after it was agreed

11. 2007 - Britney Spears shaves her head
