Swansea captain signs new contract: Five Positives

Swansea City Warm Up 2

Swansea City captain Garry Monk has extended his contract at the club by a further year.

Garry Monk is one of the most experienced players that Swansea have at their disposal and he’s just signed a new one-year deal to stay with the club.

The 33-year-old has not been playing much under Michael Laudrup but the positives of this news go a lot further than simply his abilities as a player.

Mr. Swansea

Monk is very much Mr. Swansea in the respect that he knows the club inside out and appreciates the journey the side has undergone. Monk has captained the team in the top four tiers of English football which is something most other club skippers in the Premier League won’t achieve.

Experience

His experience is crucial for the team. He’s played over 400 times for Swansea which gives him a vast wealth of knowledge which will benefit the side whenever Michael Laudrup needs to throw him into the team at short notice. This experience allows him to be effective despite the lack of games he’s currently playing.

Defensive Ability

His ability as a defender is still very good. He’s solid in the air, reads the game well and knows how to counter for the fact he’s lost some pace throughout the years. He’s also been brought up at the club with the ideology of passing football which means the defence and the team doesn’t have to change style just because he’s in the side.

Leadership

He is a leader and not just on the pitch when he’s selected. He plays a big role away from the pitch in terms of being the perfect role model for the youngsters at the club or just being a natural leader that any squad member can approach, if they need to talk openly about a problem.

Popularity

He’s popular with the fans so the news will continue to have a positive effect amongst the supporter’s communities. Swansea still sell a lot of shirts with his name on and the fans really adore him as a player so this will give everyone who follows the club a big boost, as many may have been expected the club to go in the opposite direction over his future.

Any happy Swansea fans out there? Let us know your thoughts.
