Your Mother Was Right: You Need To Sit Up Straight

Paula Moore Posture Doctor

Dr Paula Moore, The Posture Doctor, believes that when you feel good in your body, you feel good in your life. (Right now, sit up straight and tell us, don't you feel better already?)

Dr Moore has been a practising chiropractor for more than a decade. She teaches posture correction uniquely, and has been on GMTV  and BBC's Women's Hour, and has a series of YouTube videos on posture (with more than one million views). She's also written books on the topic, and her latest is called The Posture Doctor. She's got really good posture, and gives us five ways to improve ours.

Stand tall

Our desk-based lives make it difficult to to have good posture, and those of you with bad posture worry about looking unattractive. Try this: Think of a big balloon attached to your chest bone, lifting your chest and lengthening your spine. Picture an accordion being stretched and allow your body to gain an inch in height.

Add 3 Years To Your Life

By the time you are 36, most of you will have lost at least three years of your life watching TV. Watching two hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks of the year adds up to 30 days, or 1 month, lost to TV, each year of your life. Yikes - turn off that TV and get your body moving.

Make It Fun!

Take lessons in something you've always wanted to learn (fencing, tennis, archery, skiing, swimming, squash, golf, dancing, or roller blading). Join a dance class (Zumba, belly dancing, pole dancing, salsa). Buy a new toy (scooter, balance board, adult trike, skateboard, football, basketball). Do something out of character and have some fun. Fun will get it done!

Recognise Your Posture Type

Do you have a sway back, flat back or slouched back? If it's a sway back (think J Lo), you've probably had babies and need to strengthen your core. If it's a straight back, you've probably had years of low back pain and sitting at a desk; try yoga. If it's a slouched back, where everything appears to be rounding and it hurts to sit up straight, see a chiropractor to loosen those stiff joints so you can straighten up.

Start Now!

Posture is the key to maintaining a youthful body, and regaining good posture should be the goal of anyone who wants to slow the effects of ageing. Good body alignment causes less stress and strain on the tissues and joints on the body, so you have fewer aches and pains. How you hold yourself is also a reflection of how you feel about yourself, so good posture improves confidence. Couldn't we all use a confidence boost? If you're waiting for a good time to start addressing your posture, conditions are never going to be perfect and 'someday' may never come. Don't delay, start today!
