Rio Ferdinand: I don't want to be anywhere else

Rio Ferdinand has invited Manchester United to offer him a new contract which he says he will sign.

Surely, Manchester United are not going to do a Chelsea and snub one of their best and most experienced players.

Rio Ferdinand has sent a shout out to the powers that be at Old Trafford, inviting them to offer him a new deal because he says he would love to stay at Manchester United beyond this season.

“Of course I would want to stay, 100 per cent, provided I'm still playing like I am and feeling as good as I am at the moment. Manchester United is a great club, the number one, and you would never want to play anywhere else if you can still play for them,Ferdinand told The Sun.

Ferdinand has been a main part of the United side that has raced into a nine point lead at the top of the Premier League and secured a last 16 round place in the Champions League.

When he’s been fit and on form he has started in the United defence because he provides that level of experience and leadership that the team craves over a long season.

It could be that United are simply thinking through the best way to go about contract negotiations because they may have already spotted some potential stalling points.

Ferdinand, now 34-years-old, may want a longer deal than United are prepared to offer him, to stay at the club for the rest of his career.

Alternatively United may want Ferdinand to sign a similar contract to Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and the manager Sir Alex Ferguson currently enjoy.

These contracts are rolling contracts which are reviewed at the end of each season. It gives the player the option of moving on or retiring at a later point and it allows Ferguson to leave the club when he feels comfortable doing so.

It’s likely that if Ferdinand wants to stay at the club, he may just have to dance to United’s tune because although he is still a very good player, there could be few top clubs around Europe willing to offer him the contract he may be looking for.

The fact Ferdinand has been talking about this matter again suggests that he feels he still has a great deal to offer United. He wouldn’t be talking about the subject if he knew his days at Old Trafford were numbered.

It has to be a waiting game because Fergie is not the sort of manager who lets his best players walk away from the club in a summer for absolutely nothing.
