Should Chelsea look at former England goalkeeper?

Could former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson be about to move to Chelsea?

Petr Cech has been ruled out of mid-week international duty for the Czech Republic with a broken finger.

It’s an injury he picked up during the defeat to Newcastle United and one which leaves a gaping great hole in the heart of the Chelsea side.

They need to act fast if they are going to cover for Cech. Ross Turnbull is likely to deputise but the club may prefer a more experienced goalkeeper and Paul Robinson could be the ideal candidate.

Robinson has been told by Blackburn Rovers that he can leave the club on loan and he could be tempted into a short term loan deal which would suit all parties.

It would give Chelsea cover in the form of a highly experienced goalkeeper and it would provide Robinson with the chance to see if he can still cut it at Premier League level.

“I punched the ball and the head of one of Newcastle players at the same time. I thought it was nothing but went for an x-ray just in case. However, it showed there was a fracture,” Cech said after the game.

The injury is a slight fracture which is not as bad as a complete break but it is severe enough to keep Cech out of action for the rest of the month.

It is possible for him to play with pain killing injections but the most important part of a goalkeeper’s body are his hands, which means Chelsea shouldn’t be naïve enough to play him unless he’s 100 per cent fit.

Robinson could do a job. He is a great leader and very commanding around the penalty area and he reads the game well due to his years of experience.

He does not have the pace and rapid agility that he once did but he’s still good enough to make brilliant stops at close range and close down strikers quickly in one on one situations.

It’s a crucial period for Chelsea in the league and also in Europe with their Europa League participation about to start. At the moment, Turnbull, who has made mistakes this season, will play the majority of games.

Chelsea also have Hilario as cover but the West London side shouldn’t ignore the chance to bring in a goalkeeper who was once considered the best ‘keeper in the country.

Is Paul Robinson to Chelsea a good idea?
