Joe Hart: Manchester City can bridge points gap to Manchester United

Joe Hart has warned Manchester United that Manchester City will not disappear from the title race despite falling nine points behind after Sunday's 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

There are only 13 games remaining for City to catch United and, although Hart admits the deficit is a concern, the goalkeeper said: "We will always be in it but unfortunately it's a big gap – getting too big for our liking. You have to move forward and that means we have to beat Southampton [on Saturday]. We can't hide the facts. We are nine points behind with 13 games to go, so we need the win. We need to do what we have done in the last seven games before, when we won six and drew one. But of course we have now drawn again and that is enough with the draws. We need to start winning."

He said of City's attempts to retain the title: "Of course we still feel we can do this. That's who we are, and that's what we are. We've put ourselves in a worse position than we would like to be, but that's football sometimes."

Hart is unsure if City can rely on United suffering a dip in form. "The only time we can have an impact on them is when we play them," he said. "They do what they do, and I'm sure they have realised that if they play well they have a very good chance, but we know that we will always be there."

After Edin Dzeko opened the scoring for City, goals from Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard appeared to have won the game for Liverpool until Sergio Agüero's late equaliser.

Hart believes the point that strike claimed may be prove valuable. "You could say it was a good result for us in the end – it was a tough one," he said. "You want to win, but we went behind and Sergio has had to pull something out for us to get a result. He didn't have any impact on the game whatsoever, but that's what great players do, and he scored a goal that counted."

Hart also made a telling contribution with a late save that denied Sturridge. "I hope it can help keep us in the title race," he said. "Daniel managed to put one past me in the first half but you can only save what you can save. If it's possible to save it, I like to think I'll be there, and hopefully that will help us."
