Not many stories criticising David De Gea this morning are there?
David De Gea produced one of his best performances for Manchester United in the 1-0 weekend win away at Fulham.
De Gea has been heavily criticised by various sources following the mistake which led to Tottenham Hotspur’s equaliser in the recent 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane.
He is a human being and is likely to have known a little about this criticism and he’s also likely to have known how annoyed his teammates were about that particular mistake.
He hasn’t hidden away or let his head drop, allowing Anders Lindegaard into the number one slot, he seems to have worked doubly hard and his performance against Fulham was superb.
We’ve always known that De Gea has been one of the best shot stoppers in the business but there was something a little more deft about his goalkeeping in this particular match.
He produced his standard superb saves as we all know he can, one in particular from a shot by Bryan Ruiz, was world class; a fingertip save onto the post that would have stopped the ball going in off.
It’s not just this save ability which was impressive.
Firstly, every time De Gea gets the ball and looks up, his distribution is as good as any other goalkeeper in the world. You don’t seem him madly spraying the ball up to the half way line for no reason or carting it out sideways for a throw in.
This has the ability to help set United counter attacks up quickly and it was vital when Fulham were piling on the pressure in the second half of that win over the weekend.
He also looked a lot more determined and busy every time Fulham got a set piece in a dangerous area or a corner.
One of the areas De Gea always seems to get criticised in is his ability to command the defence and take control of a situation, when the ball is being dropped into United’s penalty area.
Most importantly, there were a few examples of him sticking up for himself when Fulham tried to put a man in front of him to keep him on his line. He was aided a couple of times by players on the line but there were improvements.
The rumours about him, his future and apparently better alternatives available to United will not go away because he is going to make mistakes but there are many reasons why he can now go from strength to strength.
What did you make of De Gea’s performance against Fulham?
