Barcelona Insiders: Villa wants Arsenal switch

Barcelona officials have claimed that David Villa has his heart set on a move to Arsenal this summer.

David Villa would be a superb signing for Arsenal but whether they can pull it off amidst the competition for such a high quality player remains to be seen.

Insiders at the Spanish club are claiming that Villa has said he wants to move to the Gunners this summer and will be transferred for a cheaper fee than first thought.

Villa was a name doing the rounds last month at a price of around £16 million but with no contract extension likely at Barcelona, he could be sold to Arsenal this summer for around £13-14 million.

The biggest stumbling block in a move to Arsenal would be the current contract policy which Arsene Wenger has in relation to older players.

He seems to prefer putting his older players on rolling contracts while securing the future of younger stars on long term deals.

The obvious disadvantage of this is that Villa will probably be looking for the last move of his career and could get a long term deal from any number of clubs who want him.

His current wage deal at Barca would not force Arsenal to break the bank so they may be tempted into offering him a slightly longer deal than would otherwise be normal for a player the wrong side of 30.

There are also three major reasons why Villa should be keen in a move to Arsenal; the city, the manager and the side.

London offers Villa the familiarity of being in a massive European city so his way of life shouldn’t change too drastically other than being in another country.

Wenger is not the sort of boss who is going to play mind games with Villa, buy him for ulterior motives, misuse him or cause any other sort of problem during his Arsenal career.

The side is geared up to support the exact style of play where Villa is at his best; pass and move football.

He’ll have to adjust as would any other player but he’s perfectly suited to fit in with the Arsenal style and philosophy of football instantly.

Is Villa right to go after an Arsenal move? Should he wait?
