After missing out on Leroy Fer due to a medical problem, Everton are going all out to secure the transfer of Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo.
Say what you like about the way David Moyes handles himself in the transfer market or the way he spends money but he knows how to target the right players for his club. If Everton pull off the signing of Alvaro Negredo today, Everton will be one happy club with a player who can help them big time.
Negredo is never going to get into the headlines in La Liga because of the exploits of other higher profile players. However, his record this season is superb with nine goals from 19 games, as good as any other striker Everton have been linked with throughout January.
Negredo has recent experience of playing in the Europa League, the competition Everton look most likely to end up in next season. This effectively gives them the chance to plan ahead for next season which may seem a little over confident but it just means Negredo has multiple benefits for Everton in terms of his knowledge of the game.
Negredo would give Everton different options in attack. Moyes would be able to name Negredo as an out and out sole striker or he could play him in behind someone else because his upbringing in the Spanish game means his technique is good enough that it allows him to dip into the midfield.
At 27-years-old there is still a little bit of time for Negredo to develop as a player. He is not at the cloak and dagger stage of his career just yet and he’s around peak age for most professional players which means Everton should see the best of him if they manage to get him in through the door at Goodison Park.
He seems to be a massively disciplined player which is important for any club over the course of a season. He has been booked only once in La Liga this season and picked up only five bookings over the course of last season in all competitions. This means there is very little chance of him being suspended.
Do you see any chance of Negredo going to Everton?
