1. 1606 - Guy Fawkes is executed after being convicted for his role in the Gunpowder Plot against the English Parliament and King James I

3. 1950 - U.S. President Truman announces that he has ordered development of the hydrogen bomb

4. 1953 - A major storm with winds in excess of 100mph causes flooding in three countries, with North Sea coastal areas killing a total of more than 2,000 people in the Netherlands Great Britain and Belgium

5. 1961 - A chimpanzee sent into space in a United States rocket is recovered alive and well from the sea near Florida

6. 1968 - A 19-man Viet Cong suicide squad seizes the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, and holds it for six hours until an assault force of U.S. paratroopers landed by helicopter on the building's roof and take back control

7. 1972 - Aretha Franklin sings at Mahalia Jackson's funeral

8. 1981 - Justin Timberlake is born

9. 1996 - Fifty die in a Sri Lanka suicide bombing by Tamil Tigers, after a truck loaded with explosives is crashed into the central bank in the heart of Colombo's financial district

10. 2000 - Family GP Dr Harold Shipman is jailed for life for murdering 15 of his patients, making him Britain's most prolific convicted serial killer

11. 2005 - Keanu Reeves receives a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
