Five midfield alternatives for Everton after Leroy Fer deal collapses

The deal for FC Twente's Dutch international has fallen through due to a knee injury that showed up on his medical. So which player could Everton chase instead; including a West Ham star.

Only yesterday the report was clear that Everton were on the verge of completing a deal for Leroy Fer of FC Twente. The Dutch international had completed a medical, signed personal terms and the clubs had agreed on a fee; everything was good to go. But the medical showed up a pre-existing knee problem and after lengthy re-negotiations it is believed Everton and Twente have rather acrimoniously decided to end proceedings prematurely.

While it is a shame not to see Fer arrive at Goodison Park there is still scope for a replacement target. Now we know just what Everton are willing to spend (somewhere in the region of £9 million) we can assess possible alternatives to the man affectionately known as ‘The Bouncer’.

Considering they also missed out on Yann M’Vila last week the target is clear. Everton are after a powerful central midfield player to add sufficient cover to one of their weakest areas of the pitch.

So who could be on their way to Everton?

Etienne Capoue - Toulouse

The Toulouse star was linked with the club earlier in the month but their attentions were clearly on Fer at that time. With that deal now out of the question the likelihood is they will make a move for the French international instead. However with his asking price at £10 million and the fact his current club recently lost Moussa Sissoko to Newcastle United they may struggle to barter that down.

Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe - Club Brugge

Not very imaginative considering Everton did try to sign him in the summer and making a move for him again now makes sense. He fits the bill but with a little more money to play with Everton might fancy something a little more extravagant.

Pedro Obiang - Sampdoria

The Sampdorian Spaniard is a similar player to Fer and has attracted interest from Manchester City, Tottenham and Napoli in recent months. At 20-years-old he would represent a fantastic investment but again his asking price is above what Everton might afford so negotiations might get messy.

Momo Diame - West Ham

Why not? Arsenal seem to be tip-toeing around a potential move for Diame and he has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season. His release clause is said to be £3.5 million in some quarters while it is £7 million in others. Either way Everton can afford him.

Jeremy Toulalan - Malaga

Malaga apparently want to move the 29-year-old on in order to loosen the pretty tight pursestrings at La Rosaleda. A French international with bags of experience he could prove an excellent signing even if he doesn’t quite fit the bill in terms of age and playing style.

Who do you think Everton should pursue in light of the Leroy Fer collapse?
