Manchester United fans react to Shinji Kagawa performance on Twitter

Manchester United extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points.

After a nightmare start when Michael Carrick got David de Gea into a twist and United went behind within two minutes, Wayne Rooney rescued the Red Devils.

United won 2-1 against a spirited Southampton thanks to Rooney's first half brace, capitalising on Manchester City's dropped points away to QPR yesterday to restore a seven point gap at the top of the Premier League.

United played an attacking formation, fielding Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa.

Kagawa is an interesting one because after signing in the summer for £17 million, United have yet to really settle on a formation to get the best out of him.

Ferguson appears determined to play both Kagawa and Rooney when he can, even though with Rooney playing off Van Persie, he likes to drift into the same sort of spaces Kagawa occupies.

With Welbeck lining up on the right-wing, Kagawa found himself spending much of his time out on the left, with Rooney through the middle behind Van Persie.

The £17 million man even stated early this week that he was not happy with his form so far this season, "I'm really feeling that I need to perform better," he told the Daily Mirror. "I'm not satisfied with what I have done here at all."

So how did he get on last night?

From a statistical point of view, his passing accuracy (83 per cent) was higher than any other United midfielder or attacker on the pitch. He had one shot which hit the post, and he crucially laid on the through ball for Wayne Rooney to hit the equaliser.

He faded in the second half, substituted in the 73rd minute for Nani, but he can be pleased at playing a part in contributing to the three points, which will surely boost his confidence.

We decided to take a look at Twitter to gauge a reaction of how United fans viewed his performance:

@gracefulraven: Kagawa for me showed his potential from that beauty of an assist for Wayne #MUFC

@kyle1187: On a positive not, I thought Kagawa had a good game. Starting to look the player he was at Dortmund. #MUFC #Dortmund

@scodawg77: Kagawa assist for Rooney 1st was what we paid for in the summer. Beautiful chipped pass over the defence. Also hit the post. #mufc

@thescream89: Kagawa was our best player tonight, that ball for the goal was brilliant#mufc

@mrsc47: Kagawa is something special. Could actually create chances like something else! Very happy we got that kind of a spark in our team.#mufc.

@officialbush: I love #MUFC but would like to see kagawa get a full game.

@carltrumpess: I hate seeing Kagawa out on the wing, such a good player but just not his position. #MUFC

@busbymufc: Kagawa not yet fully fit so he faded in the second half but was largely excellent while on the pitch I thought.

@andrewcembling: Rooney's first goal was excellent. The pass from Kagawa was absolutely exquisite. Touch of class.

@geepshore: A think kagawa is an absolute cracking player !!! His ball control is phenomenal

@dannyhughes309: Kagawa best position definitely on the left cutting inside , similar to what silva does for city

@financehog: Shinji Kagawa is an artist with the ball. His passing is beautiful. #MUFC

@_rob_b: Think Kagawa looked comfortable wide. Obvs he likes to play central but Nani isnt going to challenge him wide in this form. Valencia neither

What did you think of Kagawa? What is his best position, and can United play both himself and Rooney?
