Liverpool should pay Gerrard whatever he wants to end his career at Anfield

Brendan Rodgers has claimed that Steven Gerrard is like a player who has been ‘dropped from heaven’ and has urged the club to offer him a new deal.

Steven Gerrard has been the figure head of Liverpool for well over a decade which is a lot longer than many players even stay at a single club.

As yet, Liverpool have not extended Gerrard’s current contract with the club and manager Brendan Rodgers has urged the powers that be at Anfield to ensure that Gerrard remains a Liverpool player for the rest of his career.

As a player, he remains one of the best midfielders that the club has to choose from. His experience compensates for his lack of pace and his variety of passing skills is as good as it’s ever been.

“Steven Gerrard is a unique player. When he came on at Oldham it was like someone had dropped him from heaven into the game - I can't say that without Steven Gerrard we would be alright because I don't believe we would. This is a top, top player who gives so much quality but also enthusiasm,” said Rodgers as on ESPN.

It’s that enthusiasm and energy which makes Gerrard much more than just a midfield man at the club.

He is an inspirational figure, a figure who has stuck by the club when he’s had the chance to move on and play for some of Liverpool’s main rivals.

This is arguably the most important reason Liverpool need to ensure he signs an extension to his current deal. With the number of young players coming up through the ranks at Liverpool, Gerrard’s ability to have an impact on that is greater than anything the club could spend or buy.

He also has that ability to demand the very best from his teammates in the middle of a game where they are not pulling their weight.

The FA Cup match away at Oldham Athletic is one such example and when Gerrard came on, he seemed to bang heads together and gave Liverpool a better chance of getting out of that situation which they unfortunately couldn’t.

In a way, it’s fairly similar to the current situation of Frank Lampard at Chelsea with the exception that Liverpool are not idiots and won’t let one of their best players walk away at the end of his current deal.

Gerrard is now the second oldest player in Liverpool’s registered first team squad and Rodgers has confirmed the club will talk to him at some point over the rest of the season but it seems mad that it hasn’t already happened.

Why do you think Liverpool haven’t offered Gerrard a contract extension?
