Just how long left does Paul Lambert have at Aston Villa?
Take nothing away from Newcastle who were superb and able to name a side with Yohan Cabaye in it who stole the show. The influential Frenchman went onto bag the winner, leading to the inevitable question regarding just how long Paul Lambert has left in the job?
Villa have won just four games across all competitions so far this season and Randy Lerner’s recent comments about Lambert suggest that he may only be given the boot, when it’s too late to make any difference.
There are several reasons why Villa are in their current position; an inability to score goals, bizarre squad selections by Lambert, a largely inexperienced team and several more.
Aston Villa have been very much an established Premier League club for years, spanning different decades and at the moment they don’t seem to be too worried about their future in the top flight of English football.
They are in amongst a group of four clubs that could all easily finish in the bottom three by the end of the season.
The danger for Villa is waiting too long before making a managerial change which might save the club. At the moment, that doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen regardless of Lambert’s inability to put together any run of good form.
Villa have 14 games left from which they need to get around 20 points, which on the surface of things shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
However, if Lambert does not get the side to improve and doesn’t change the club’s position drastically before six or seven games left to play, it could be too late for them to get out of trouble if they give him the boot.
It’s all hypothetical but Newcastle took the opportunity last night to drag themselves up the table that Villa should have sweated blood for.
At times Villa rallied in the match but their efforts seemed to arrive too late in the match with Newcastle holding out with a solid defensive shape. Villa’s manager has a mountain to climb and the club has some big decisions to make.
Villa fans, do you still want Lambert as manager? Who would you like to replace him?
