It’s been widely publicised that Norwich City have been trying to sign Gary Hooper from Celtic with the Scottish champions holding out for a fee closer to £10 million.
Well, Norwich could well have had enough and according to various media sources, they will try and sign Jamie Mackie from QPR before the end of the month.
It makes sense for Norwich because the fee would be substantially lower at £3 million and Mackie seems suited to the way Chris Hughton likes his teams to play football.
Mackie is a very versatile player which is important for a side like Norwich, with the manager not having a massive squad of players to choose from.
Mackie creates extra options. He can play right at the top of the attack as a central striker or he can play wider in the same sort of role that Danny Welbeck plays for Manchester United.
This allows Hughton to be more aggressive if he decides to go with another main striker but opt for a 4-5-1 formation, especially when the Canaries play away from home.
Ideally, Norwich like to get the ball on the floor and pass their way into the opponent’s final third but that’s not always possible.
The presence of Mackie in attack means Norwich can hit the ball long into space, as he is quick enough to chase it down up against most defenders.
He is never going to play the Grant Holt hold up sort of role in the Norwich attack but his skill in terms of space play means Norwich can become more effective on the counter attack.
He’s also likely to relish a move because at 27-years-old, he’ll still feel as though he has a lot to give at the highest level of the game.
Fair enough, he’s not featured in Harry Redknapp’s plans at QPR but he’s dealt with a bad leg break so far in his career and seems like a very passionate and driven person.
Norwich are going to need someone in their side over the rest of the side, who will chase down a lost cause and will run until he’s got nothing left. That has the ability to rub off on other players and is just another reason why Norwich should sign Mackie ahead of Hooper.
