Michael Carrick is set to switch to a similar rolling contract enjoyed by Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes at Manchester United as he heads towards the latter stage of his career.
Michael Carrick has been one of the stand out performers for Manchester United this season, producing consistent and efficient displays in almost every game.
The worry for United fans is that Carrick could walk away from Old Trafford for free this summer as his current contract is set to expire.
However, many national newspapers are reporting that the player and the club have already agreed to switch to one year rolling contracts from the end of the season going forward.
There is absolutely no harm in this at all and United legends Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are both playing on this sort of deal and it’s also a similar contract to the one Sir Alex Ferguson has.
Carrick’s current importance to the Manchester United side can be illustrated by the fact that he has started in 48 out of the last 50 matches for the club.
His skill and effectiveness on the pitch often goes unappreciated because he’s never the sort of player who is going to do a million step overs or race around after a particular player, looking to kick them up in the air.
What he does most effectively for United is cut off space and cut off the angles. Watch him in any game and he’ll position himself in the way of where the next forward pass can go from the opposition midfield.
He’s also managed to stay fit which has given Ferguson help in the respect that his selection is virtually always guaranteed for any United game.
Ferguson himself has already stated that Carrick will not be leaving Old Trafford this summer, even before negotiations between the player and the club have formally started.
When they do, it’s expected that all of the talks and discussions behind the scenes will lead to Carrick signing on at United without really having to think about what he’s doing or where his career is heading.
United fans can forget about the worry of him leaving and look forward to the possibility of players joining the midfield ranks either by the end of this month or in the summer.
Many reports have suggested that United are going after an out and out midfield enforcer and someone who can compliment Carrick and Shinji Kagawa in a more creative role in the side.
United fans, is this the best bit of news for you this season?
