If reports that Chelsea are interested in Jack Butland are true, then they can bully their way to securing his transfer.
The Daily Mirror has reported that Chelsea are now leading the race to sign Birmingham City goalkeeper Jack Butland.
Birmingham are struggling financially and seem to be holding onto Butland to create a bidding war between the sides interested in him, which also includes Liverpool.
If the interest from Chelsea is real then any other side will have a very difficult time stopping them from getting their man.
Out of all the sides linked with signing Butland, Chelsea are head and shoulders above every other team in terms of the fee they can pay and the personal terms they can offer.
This doesn’t mean Chelsea are going to pay over the odds for a potential Petr Cech replacement because the Mirror is also suggesting the Blues will go in with a bid of around the £3 million mark.
You then have to figure in the desires of Butland. He could find it very difficult to say no to the European Champions who offer regular Champions League football and a genuine chance to win the Premier League each season.
There is also going to be a little bit of ego to factor in because Butland could be the sort of player who demands first team football.
With there being no guarantee that Cech is going to leave Chelsea or retire any time soon, it’s highly likely that Butland will be confined to warming the bench at Stamford Bridge with the odd start in less important matches.
This could offer hope to the other sides trying to sign him in the respect that they could place Butland straight into their respective first teams.
Cech has been the backbone of the current Chelsea side for a number of years and was one of the original signings at the start of the Roman Abramovich era.
Chelsea could do a lot worse because Butland is the sort of high class goalkeeper any decent side will try to sign. He has everything from fitness and agility to shot stopping, decision making and leadership.
One thing is for sure. If Chelsea are interested then where’s the sense in Butland choosing any other side?
Chelsea fans, would Butland be a good replacement for Cech?
