Sources in Italy have linked Arsene Wenger's team with a move for the 21 year midfielder, what could he bring to Arsenal's squad in the second half of the season?
With Mikel Arteta injured and Abou Diaby generally on the verge of picking up a knock himself, Arsenal might try to add some cover to their central midfield this window with a move for Jorginho, a 21 year old who plays for Serie B side Hellas Verona.
Jorginho has impressed so far this season play in a deep central midfield position for his side, who currently sit third in the table. As a result, it is not only Arsenal who have taken an interest in the player, with plenty of Serie A sides looking at Jorginho, including Lazio, AC Milan and Napoli.
Arsene Wenger has always had a reputation for finding diamonds in the rough, but a move for Jorginho would be taking this to the extreme. Whilst he has reportedly enjoyed a fine season in Serie B, he is still untested at anything approaching Premier League level, and it's tricky to see what he could bring to the squad that their existing back up options like Francis Coquelin don't already offer.
The youngster moved to Verona for an undisclosed fee from Serie D side AC Sambonifacese in summer 2011, and is now rated at around €4 million. Clearly this would be part of his appeal to Arsenal, as Wenger wouldn't want to splash the cash on someone who is intended to only be a back-up for the foreseeable future.
However should Arsenal be aiming higher than Jorginho, even if just to bring in a back-up? After all, Diaby's injury record suggests that any player brought in could see plenty of action, and even if Jorginho has plenty of potential, it's unlikely he's ready for Premier League action already.
Wenger's transfer history shows he can pluck a gem from relative obscurity, but there are enough recent failures in the squad to demonstrate he's not always picked the right man. With Arsenal in a dogfight for Champions League qualification, their fans might hope that Jorginho is not the only player linked with a move to their midfield before the end of the month.
