Tottenham Hotspur's Kenny McEvoy faces an unusual spotlight

Tottenham Hotspur Action

A fine performance in the FA youth cup win over West Ham would have gained 18-year old-Kenny McEvoy some attention, but his striking similarity to Gareth Bale means he's got more to deal with than the average youth player.

Young players usually receive their first big bout of media attention on the back of a sparkling performance that demonstrates their potential, and this is partly the case with how Kenny McEvoy has burst onto the scene this week. The 18 year old was excellent in helping Spurs to a 5-2 FA youth cup win over West Ham on Tuesday night, but it's fair to say that's not the only reason for the attention he has been getting.

McEvoy bears a striking physical resemblance to Gareth Bale, and the fact that he is also a quick left winger has led to a flurry of articles describing him as the next Bale in the making. Comparisons with more established player are an inevitable part of how a youngster becomes known in football, but this might be taking it a little too far.

Focussing on McEvoy as a player, he has the potential to one day break into the Spurs squad. Fast, technically proficient and well grounded; McEvoy has enough talent to make a name for himself in Spurs' excellent youth set up. However labelling him as a possible replacement for Gareth Bale already is far too much to expect from someone just beginning his career.

At Spurs, the next big test for McEvoy will be breaking into their U21 side rather than looking at any senior team action. The now established U21 Premier League and Next Gen tournament should give McEvoy plenty of chances to impress at a youth team level, but even that is no guarantee of breaking into the senior squad.

Interest will no doubt fade in McEvoy in the next few days, and until he delivers another performance like he did against West Ham he should be able to carry on his development in relative obscurity. If he starts turning in those performances every week at youth team level, then we might get a chance to see how much he can resemble Gareth Bale when playing in the senior side.

Have you seen McEvoy play? Can he be as good as Bale?
